As spring break approaches, and 40 percent of the U.S. population has now been vaccinated, as well as, 1 in 5 Californians, there is much anticipation to spring out of your house.

Out of the 13 months I’ve been in quarantine, I’ll confess I went on three trips. Two were in cars and, last month exactly a year of quarantine, I flew on a plane to visit a friend. It was my first time flying in nearly three years. I took all the precautions and I’ve been staying home ever since. I’m happy to write, I am just fine.

After that last trip, I started to feel normal again. I’ve felt like a caged animal this past year as I’m sure many people have. I began to take the time to appreciate being home and doing things that made me feel like I was enjoying myself on vacation.

Since I’m not vaccinated yet, as the qualification date for ages 16 and up is April 15, I’m trying to stay at home as much as possible, so I’ve created my very own homecation 101.

Part of homecationing is having balance. Indulge and discipline.

  • Raise your hand if you workout with a glass of wine. Me!

Sometimes you need a little inspiration to get you up and exercise. I like to have a little glass of wine at arm-reach to reward myself after so many squats and crunches. Works for me!

  • Snuggle up on your sofa with a good book.

Escape in the pages of an enchanting read that will take you anywhere and everywhere. What moves you when you want to be still and silent in the comfort of your casa?

  • Journal, even for a few minutes.

I know this one might not be everyone’s favorite and since I obviously love to write, it’s probably no surprise I keep a journal and I have since I was nine. But I’ve never felt more clarity in my own thoughts than when I put them on paper. Try it. You’ll probably be astonished by what you learn from yourself.

  • Put the phone down.

I try to practice this when possible. I consciously make an effort to stay away from screens or at least my phone. I actively have to stop myself from reaching for my mobile and start the never-ending zombie-like action that is scrolling. I absolutely loathe it when I realized I’ve been pulled in by the social bug. In my opinion, “scrollers” are modern-day zombies. Let’s strive to look up and out the window. Oh, the possibilities.

Being home is a time to center yourself. Truly be yourself in your own environment. Listen to what your mind and heart are telling you. Allow yourself to peacefully and joyfully take pleasure in simply doing nothing.

Wallow in your wonders.
