This video is an ASL interpretation of “Unsteady” by X Ambassadors.

When I recorded this video in Oct. 2018, I was going through a difficult time emotionally and this song spoke to me. It wasn’t challenging in the sense of signing to it, rather showing the appropriate amount of emotion with my singing and convey it through the video.

ASL is not just about signing with your hands, it’s also about expressing your emotions through facial expressions. It’s in the eyes. When you’re watching someone sign, you can almost feel it.

No matter how easy a song is to sign along to, it won’t be complete without the right emotion behind it. I pushed myself to release a lot of emotion here and I hope others will see and feel that too.

Also, I use my hands and my mouth to show what beats and sounds are happening in the song. You see in the intro after the chorus, there are a few seconds of beats before the first verse. When you hear, (boom boom pat) I use a closed fist to indicate a deeper beat (boom) and then an open fist for a slightly higher hit (pat). This helps the deaf feel more connected to the song. They may not hear music, but they can feel it.
